Peace in Both Christianity and Islam Essays - 702 Words
The definition of peace means being free from disturbance. From a biblical perspective, the absence of conflict is only the beginning of peace. True peace includes personal wholeness, righteousness, political justice, and prosperity for all creation. Thatââ¬â¢s the way God intended things to be when he created his garden, his paradise. ââ¬Å"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives.â⬠(John 14:27) The Islamic perspective is as well about peace and knowledge and true Muslims are peace-loving people. Peace is promoted as Allah (S.W.T) says in the Quran God does not forbid you to be kind and equitable to those who have neither fought against your faith nor driven you out of your homes. This stresses the importance of peace to adherentââ¬â¢s as it links the practice of living a peaceful life to the foundational belief in God as the father of creation. The word Islam means surrender or submission, submission to the will of Allah, the one God. Being a Muslim requires wilful submission and active obedience to God and living in accordance with His message and that can be translated into following the Qurââ¬â¢an. The Quran is the fundamental text for all Muslims as it is believed to contain the revelation of Allah, complete and unaltered as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. The secondary sacred text is the Hadith which refers to the collection of traditions, words and deeds of the prophet Muhammad who lived in accordance to the beliefs of Islam in the way which Allah intended. Peace is achieved through submission to Allah and this is reinforced through daily prayer (Salat). The two traditions also hold differences in relation to their efforts to achieve peace on both a local and global level. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald - 1412 Words
Francis Scott Key Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s novel The Great Gatsby showcases the American society during the Roaring 1920s. During this time period many longed to be rich and become a member of the upper class. It became oneââ¬â¢s dream to obtain good social standing rather than to achieve freedom and happiness. Fitzgerald creates characters, such as Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby, who are more concerned with wealth than what truly makes them happy in life. Therefore, many perceive the theme of this novel to be achieving the American Dream; an idea that people in America, the land of opportunity, could achieve success and prosperity through hard work and perseverance. However, I believe that Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby as a warning for howâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The constant staring of these large eyes represents not only God looking down on the characters but also the idea and concept of morals present in every character. The eyes continue to stare down on the charact ers because of their carefree lifestyle. Almost every character in the novel is neglecting their morals by forgetting what is truly important in life, since they are more concerned with how they can become wealthy and achieve a higher social status. ââ¬Å"Evidently some wild wag of an oculist set them there to fatten his practice in the borough of Queens and then sank down himself into eternal blindness or forgot them and moved away. But his eyes, dimmed a little by many paintless days under sun and rain, brood on over the solemn dumping ground.â⬠(Fitzgerald 27-28). As Fitzgerald describes, this billboard has not been kept up with and appears to be rather worn down and practically disintegrating. As stated, this billboard symbolizes not only God but also the spiritual and moral values of those in society. Therefore, when it is mentioned that their society is not paying any attention to or acknowledging the advertisement, it clearly represents the characters constant dis regard of their values. If the theme of this novel were thought to be achieving the American Dream, one would consider this billboard to simply be an image of God watching over the characters and their actions
